African IXP Association (AFIX) and the Internet Society (ISOC) will hold the 12th annual African Peering and Interconnection Forum in Accra, Ghana, from 22 – 24 August 2023. The event, hosted by the MainOne, an Equinix Company, aims to promote the development of national and cross border interconnection by:

Bringing together infrastructure providers, content providers, service providers, and policy-makers to engage, share experiences, and learn from experts in their field.
Promoting the establishment and growth of Internet Exchange Points by fostering community cooperation and by demonstrating the value of local, national, and regional interconnection.
Sharing knowledge about the economics of network interconnection and peering in order to reduce information asymmetry.
Providing opportunities for participants to establish interconnection and other agreements through dedicated “Peering Bilaterals” meeting sessions.
Facilitating participant interaction through social activities and an online portal

AFPIF 2023

After eleven years of engagement, AfPIF has earned its reputation as the seminal event for peering and interconnection in Africa. Social Activities

Planned social activities include:

Beers for Peers: An informal event designed to provide an opportunity for participants to meet and interact in an informal environment early in the conference schedule. This event will be held on the evening of Tuesday 22 August and is sponsored by NAPAfrica.
Gala Dinner: A more formal event designed to give participants an opportunity to interact and enjoy a taste of Ghanaian cuisine and culture. This event will be held on the evening of Wednesday 23 August and will be hosted by MainOne, an Equinix Company.

AfPIF also provides additional opportunities for interaction in its exhibition area and in the Peering Bilaterals sessions which are designed to facilitate one-on-one meetings between participants.

The Venue

Ghana, is a country in West Africa, spanning diverse biomes that range from coastal savannas to tropical rainforest. It abuts the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, sharing borders with Ivory Coast in the west, Burkina Faso in the north, and Togo in the east. It is centrally located – The Greenwich meridian passes through Tema in Accra, and easily accessible by flight (5 hours to East Africa, 6 hours to Southern Africa, 6 hours to Europe, 11 hours to the US, 8 hours to the Middle East). Within West Africa, it is easy access via flight and road from West African neighbours, with about 1 hour flight time to major West African hubs.

Visa is not a requirement to about 20 countries in Africa, and is issued upon arrival to most of the rest, within a short time.

Ghana has a stable political environment, and has several attractions – Forts, castles, beaches, canopy walks, and has tasty cuisines; look out for red red, jollof rice, fufu etc.

Ghana is connected to about 13 West African countries via submarine and terrestrial cables, which offers a great environment for data centers, It has vibrant industry associations, and a great policy environment.

Accra is attractive, and secure. It is safe to walk or move around in Accra 24/7, has friendly people, there is ease of transportation.
